June 23, 2005 Fortunately, my wife, Toné was able to take me to the airport today. At first, my stepdaughter was gonna’ take me because Toné had a buncha’ work to do. She was able to shuffle some things around. I wouldn’t have mind if my stepdaughter, Shauna, took me. But the ‘good-bye’ kiss wouldn’t have been as nice. I got to BWI early so I just did my usual ‘people watching’ thing. I love airports. I like the thought of people going somewhere. I flew straight into Denver. Most of the band was already there and on the tour bus. Divinity’s flight had landed like 3 hours earlier and the Nashville guys arrived shortly after she did. Danette, Saundra and Derico’s flight from NYC landed shortly after my flight. Victor was flying in the next day. I walked to wait on the tour bus and was greeted an incredible sight. There were 2 rainbows side-by-side. You could see the ends of both rainbows. It was an amazing sight and people were taking pictures. I had to call the bus from a ‘strangers’ cell phone because, for some reason, I didn’t have any reception. I started talking to her about Colorado and DC (she was originally from DC). She said that she thought that her boyfriend listened to Victor’s music. The Todd, the bus driver, was waiting for the NYC crew to grab their bags and come outside before he came around to pick us up so wouldn’t hafta’ make too many loops around. I started getting a little anxious because the last game of the NBA finals was already on. I was hoping the Detroit Pistons would win because they had some former Washington Wizard players. When we finally got on the bus we greeted each other. It seems like it’s been a long time since we saw each other. This had been the longest break we’ve taken all year. Joe didn’t even play the last gig so it had been even longer since I seen him. The NBA game was almost at halftime. We stopped at an Outback restaurant to get some food on the way to the hotel. Danette and Saundra were kind enough to pick up my food so I wouldn’t miss any of the game. Detroit lost the game but it was a good series. It seems like the only basketball I get to watch is the championship series. I used Joseph’s phone to call Toné because I still didn’t have any reception with my phone. It had to be close 11pm when we got to the hotel. We were staying here 2 nights in a row. The Denver gig scheduled for the next day was cancelled so we were starting the tour with a day off. Man,…the extra day off is gonna’ make all the difference in the world. I talked to Toné a couple of times. I finally got some reception! I also talked to Jodie Woodward from Bass Camp. We decide to go on an early morning hike the next day. I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow.
peace&blessings, “Smells Like Funk”
